Forklifts are designed to be as safe and dependable as possible. However, they are powerful machines, and must be handled properly for maximum safety. Before operating a forklift, perform a safety check to ensure that you and those around you are not injured. The procedures vary slightly between gas, LPG and diesel forklifts, and electric forklifts, but some of the most important items on a basic checklist can be found in the following guide:
Before You Start the Lift Truck
True forklift safety begins before you even get behind the wheel. Take a look at this list to learn what is involved with inspecting a lift truck before the engine or motor is started:
- Check around the forklift for any leaking fluids, such as fuel, hydraulic oil, engine oil, and coolant.
- Ensure that the tires are in good condition and are fully inflated.
- Check the condition of the forks and load backrest.
- Visually check that all hoses, chains, belts, and cables are in good shape.
- Check that all guards and safety warnings are attached, and that the seatbelt is functional.
- Make sure that the battery and all fluids are at operational levels.
After the Forklift is Turned On
Once you have started the forklift, consider the following inspection points:
- Make sure the accelerator or direction pedal are working properly
- Test both the service and parking brakes
- Check that the steering is working
- Ensure that you have control of the drive, tilt, hoist and lowering, and attachments
- Test the Horn and Lights
- If there is a cab, its heater, defroster, and wipers should be checked
- Look over all gauges
It is illegal to operate a forklift without the proper certification, and OSHA requires operators to re-certify every 3 years. If you or those at your company need training, then Lonestar Forklift can provide you with a training course, either at your location or ours. Your forklift is a complicated piece of machinery that has many specialized electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic parts. Like any vehicle or piece of heavy machinery, your forklift will experience some wear as it ages. Let’s take a look at some of potential issues that affect your older forklift.
Fuel Sensor Problems
Your forklift’s fuel sensor is a very important component of your engine. It measures the amount of fuel in your forklift, and sends this information to the fuel meter on your forklift’s dashboard. If you’re having trouble with your forklift failing to start, check to see if it is low on fuel. If it is, fill it up gradually to see whether the fuel meter accurately reports the amount of fuel in the tank.
Cooling System
The cooling system is used to help regulate the temperature of your forklift’s engine. A properly functioning cooling system will help to decrease operating temperatures, keeping your forklift safe to use. Parts of your cooling system can fail as your forklift ages, including the water pump, fan, or water tank. These parts should be inspected during regular maintenance.
Electrical Components
Your forklift’s electrical parts can also fail as they get older. Basic wear and tear on your wiring harness, battery, and electrical readouts on the dashboard are likely to cause issues as they get older. If your electrical system fails, have it inspected by a forklift repair technician to determine which specific component requires attention
Hydraulic System
Maintaining an adequate level of pressure for your hydraulic system is essential to the safe and reliable operation of your forklift. Leaking hydraulic fluid can reduce the amount of pressure in your hydraulic system, which will weaken your forklift’s lifting capacity.
