Common Problems Found in Older Forklifts

Last updated 6 days ago

Your forklift is a complicated piece of machinery that has many specialized electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic parts. Like any vehicle or piece of heavy machinery, your forklift will experience some wear as it ages. Let’s take a look at some of potential issues that affect your older forklift.

Fuel Sensor Problems

Your forklift’s fuel sensor is a very important component of your engine. It measures the amount of fuel in your forklift, and sends this information to the fuel meter on your forklift’s dashboard. If you’re having trouble with your forklift failing to start, check to see if it is low on fuel. If it is, fill it up gradually to see whether the fuel meter accurately reports the amount of fuel in the tank.

Cooling System

The cooling system is used to help regulate the temperature of your forklift’s engine. A properly functioning cooling system will help to decrease operating temperatures, keeping your forklift safe to use. Parts of your cooling system can fail as your forklift ages, including the water pump, fan, or water tank. These parts should be inspected during regular maintenance.

Electrical Components

Your forklift’s electrical parts can also fail as they get older. Basic wear and tear on your wiring harness, battery, and electrical readouts on the dashboard are likely to cause issues as they get older. If your electrical system fails, have it inspected by a forklift repair technician to determine which specific component requires attention

Hydraulic System

Maintaining an adequate level of pressure for your hydraulic system is essential to the safe and reliable operation of your forklift. Leaking hydraulic fluid can reduce the amount of pressure in your hydraulic system, which will weaken your forklift’s lifting capacity.
